Energy savings – with toothed belts instead of V-belts

Increasing energy prices, CO2 emissions and environmental audits: For many companies, energy savings is an important issue. Between three and eight percent can be saved by converting from a V-belt to a toothed belt. Because of slippage, V-belts have an average efficiency of 92 percent. When it is first installed, efficiency is some 97 percent, but due to the stretching of the V-belt, efficiency continuously decreases. Poorly maintained V-belts have an efficiency much less than 90 percent.

Toothed belts, on the other hand, have an efficiency of 99 percent because of their interlocking power transfer. In addition, they run up to three years without maintenance. After conversion, companies can significantly reduce energy costs as well as maintenance costs.

Saving energy and reducing costs

To determine the savings potential in individual cases, we evaluate the existing drive with the help of a computation program. The material costs for V-belts are included in the calculation, as are energy consumption and the cost of maintenance.

We compare this information with both the cost of the toothed belts and the energy required for the operation of the machine after conversion. In this way, all important factors for energy savings are taken into account. For example, between 6,000 and 10,000 euro can be saved annually for a 250 kW motor.
